To start your driving lesson, you first need to obtain your provisional driving licence from the DVLA. You must be at least 15 years and 9 months old (you can begin driving a car when you’re 17) and be able to read a number plate from 20 metres away (with your glasses if necessary). You can apply for your provisional driving licence either by post (form D1, which costs £43) or online (costing £34). This licence is essential for your practical driving test. A theory test booking costs £23 for cars, whether on weekdays or weekends (check online for more details). Click here to find your nearest test centre. The theory test consists of two parts: the multiple-choice questions (with a pass mark of 43 out of 50 points) and the hazard perception test (requiring a pass mark of 44 out of 75 points). You must pass both parts to successfully complete the theory test. Your pass certificate number is valid for 2 years, during which you must pass your practical driving test; otherwise, you'll need to retake the theory test.
